In December 2018, Mexico chose its new president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, laying the foundation for a political turning point from the traditional PRI and PAN governments. During his first few months as commander in chief, the Mexican government brought several reforms into being, which included a plan to invest in the State Productive Enterprises (EPE) Pemex and CFE. What does this mean for the constitutional-level energy reforms that were passed in 2013, and what can we expect on a macro-economic level in the Oil & Gas sector in the country for the years to come?
Since the long debated Energy Reform, Mexico embarked on a total transformation of its energy sector on a scale unmatched anywhere else in the world. This resulted in expanding Mexico’s natural gas pipeline infrastructure from 9,000 km’s in 2010, to almost 20,000 km’s to date.

Regardless of the political transformations, it remains our view that for long-term sustainable success, stakeholders in the pipeline and oil and gas industry at large will have to work together.
